Cytomel (liothyronine sodium) is a prescription medication that contains the synthetic form of one type of thyroid hormone, triiodothyronine (T3). It is used to treat hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. Cytomel is often used when treatment with a synthetic thyroid hormone called levothyroxine (T4) alone does not adequately resolve a patient’s symptoms.

It is commonly available in several strengths, including 5 mcg, 25 mcg, and 50 mcg tablets.
Indications:
- Primary Hypothyroidism: Treatment of a condition where the thyroid gland is unable to produce sufficient thyroid hormones.
- Hypothyroidism During Pregnancy: Managing hypothyroidism in pregnant women.
- Myxedema Coma: Used in the management of severe hypothyroidism, particularly in the emergency treatment of myxedema coma.
- T3 Suppressive Therapy: Used in tests to suppress the secretion of thyrotropin (thyroid-stimulating hormone, TSH).
